Laser & CNC cost per part calculator

For a batch of identical parts: setup time is spread across the batch and scrap is added on top.

The formulas

Material = sheet price ÷ parts per sheet. Machine = machine minutes ÷ 60 × machine rate. Labour = (hands-on minutes + setup minutes ÷ quantity) ÷ 60 × labour rate. Cost per part = (material + machine + labour) ÷ (1 − scrap). Price = cost ÷ (1 − margin).

Example with the default values: material 3.00 + machine 6.00 + labour 3.33 = 12.33 per part; with a 40% margin the price is 20.56 per part. With 10% scrap the cost rises to 13.70.

Frequently asked questions

Why spread setup time over the batch?

Setup takes the same time for 1 part or 100. On small batches it is often the biggest cost, which is why one-off jobs should cost more per part.

How do I find my machine cost per hour?

Add the yearly depreciation of the machine, electricity, consumables (lenses, tubes, bits) and maintenance, then divide by the hours the machine actually runs in a year.
