VAT / sales tax calculator

Type an amount, say whether it already includes tax, and enter the rate that applies to you.

The formulas

Adding tax: total = net × (1 + rate). Removing tax: net = total ÷ (1 + rate). Tax = total − net.

Example: 1,000 before tax at 20% → 200 tax, 1,200 total. 1,200 tax included at 20% → 1,000 net. Removing 20% tax is not the same as taking 20% off the total (1,200 − 20% = 960, which is wrong).

Frequently asked questions

Which rate should I use?

The one that applies to your sale where you are: VAT in the UK and EU, state and local sales tax in the US, GST in other countries. Check with your tax office or accountant.

Why is removing tax a division?

Because the tax was calculated on the net amount, not on the total. Dividing by (1 + rate) gets you back to the net price.
