Margin & markup calculator
Enter your total cost (materials, labour, overheads) and the share of the selling price you want to keep as margin.
Margin vs markup: what’s the difference?
Margin = profit ÷ selling price. Markup = profit ÷ cost. An item that costs 100 and sells for 150 has a profit of 50: that is a 33.33% margin, a 50% markup and a ×1.5 multiplier.
The formulas
Selling price = cost ÷ (1 − margin). Multiplier = selling price ÷ cost. Example: cost 60, 25% margin → selling price 80, multiplier ×1.33.
A common mistake: adding 30% to your cost (100 → 130) gives a 23.08% margin, not 30%.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is the share of the selling price you keep after costs. Markup is how much you add on top of the cost. A 50% markup is only a 33.33% margin.
Should I include tax in the cost?
No. Work with costs before tax, then add the sales tax or VAT that applies to your sale in the last field.
Can I use this for laser or CNC jobs?
Yes, for a first estimate. To include setup time, scrap and finishing per part, use the workshop cost calculator.
